Seven Days On The Farm

Since being promoted to the Rangers prior to the previous edition of SDOTF, 1B Chris Davis has struggled to make contact (.222 AVG) and, no surprise given his history, this has been accompanied by healthy share of whiffs (20.7% K/PA). However, the power that launched him through five levels in three years is certainly there in the lone double and three homeruns he has hit in nine games. Obviously, my eyeballs will far out if Davis can sustain his current .371 ISOP, but, with his batting average likely to rebound with adjustment, the 22-year-old will eventually be able to put up an effective contribution.

New York Yankees

OF Brett Gardner is not going to pound the ball. That said, the 24-year-old knows how to draw a walk (never below 10% BB/PA) and has the speed to take advantage of it (150 SB with an 83% success rate in 370 minor league games). As a result, scouting reports tab Gardner as a solid prospect with leadoff potential.

Pittsburgh Pirates

At 25, 1B/OF Steven Pearce may have been getting concerned about his future at the highest level. This despite the fact he has been a consistently high performer throughout his minor league career. His history definitely denotes a solid everyday player, especially once he finds his major league power stroke.

Tampa Bay Rays

As if Tampa Bay needed more young talent, 22-year-old SS Reid Brignac will have a two-week opportunity to give the Rays front office a chance to review his skills while Jason Bartlett is on the disabled list. Brignac's wOBA was not stellar with AA Montgomery in 2007 and has been even weaker this season with AAA Durham, not terribly unusual given his age and relatively rapid advancement.

Texas Rangers

You have to love minor league ugly duckling stories a la Rick Ankiel or, this week, Warner Madrigal. Prior to 2006, Madrigal was going nowhere as an outfielder in the Angels farm system. Having signed a minor league contract with the Rangers prior to this season, the 24-year-old will now take his 90s fastball and a hard slider to the majors. Whatever happens at the new level, the grit it has taken to shift direction so late in the game is worth applause.
