Like the previous All League Team’s, these players were determined by having the best seasons with slight age bias going in. A younger player with a very good season is likely going to get the nod on the team over an older player with a great season. This is no a list of the best prospects, but of the best seasons.
Catcher -Jason Hagerty
The 21 year old catcher was the leading candidate in a very down year for catchers as he hit .225/.335/.399 on the season with 26 walks and 47 strikeouts.
Honorable Mention - Juan Fuentes
First Base - Ryan Wheeler
The Diamondbacks 5th round pick had one of the best debuts of any 2009 draft pick as he hit .363/.461/.538 in 280 plate appearances for Yakima. The 20 year old had 37 walks and 28 strikeouts and also tossed in 7 steals for good measure before earning a last week promotion to the Midwest League.
Honorable Mention - Nathan Freiman
Second Base - Vincent Belnome
Belnome had an incredibly well rounded season at the plate as he hit .297/.431/.500 for Eugene. The Padres 28th rounder in 2009 had 52 walks and 55 strikeouts and his 17.6% walk rate was the leagues second best rate.
Honorable Mention - Conner Crumbliss
Third Base - Edinson Rincon
The Padres third base prospect hit .300/.415/.468 for Eugene while showing outstanding plate discipline. Rincon had a 14.2% walk rate and an 18.5% strikeout rate while also going 5 for 5 in steal attempts.
Honorable Mention - Tommy Mendonca
Shortstop - Hak-Ju Lee
The South Korean prospect of the Cubs made his debut at 18 years old and didn’t disappoint. Lee hit .330/.399/.420 for Boise with 25 stolen bases while displaying strong plate discipline with a 10.2% walk rate and a 16.4% strikeout rate.
Honorable Mention - Ryan Cavan
Outfield - Miguel Valezquez
The Texas Rangers outfielder hit .297/.359/.517 on the year with 9 stolen bases. Valezquez also had an 8.2% walk rate to go along with his 18.6% strikeout rate and a .220 isolated power that ranked 4th in the league.
Outfield - Kent Matthes
The 22 year old hit .289/.364/.456 on the season for Tri-City. Matthes struggled with his plate discipline some though as he posted a 7.6% walk rate and a 27.9% strikeout rate.
Outfield - Ryan Lollis
The Salem-Keizer outfielder hit .312/.373/.417 on the year. Lollis showed excellent discipline at the plate with a 9.1% walk rate and a 10.9% strikeout rate.
Honorable Mention - Jason Codiroli, Aja Barto
Starting Pitcher - Daniel Taylor
The 21 year old split time in Yakima between the bullpen and the rotation, but he did make 9 starts. Overall he led the league with a 29.3% strikeout rate and also had a 7.4% walk rate. Taylor posted a 3.53 ERA in 63.2 innings.
Starting Pitcher - Jorge Bucardo
The Giants 19 year old threw 81.2 innings of 2.64 ERA baseball for Salem-Keizer. Bucardo had a 20.1% strikeout rate to go along with a 6.6% walk rate and a 65% groundball rate.
Starting Pitcher - Braden Tullis
The Rangers 8th round pick this year posted a 3.04 ERA over 68 innings with a 21.8% strikeout rate and a 6.8% walk rate. The 19 year old right hander also posted a 64% groundball rate that helped him allow just 1 HR all season.
Starting Pitcher - Nicholas Greenwood
Greenwood, like Daniel Taylor, split time between the rotation and the bullpen, but made more starts than relief appearances. The 21 year old had a 1.71 ERA over 63.1 innings pitched with a 19.3% strikeout rate along with his 6.2% walk rate.
Honorable Mentions - Craig Bennigson, Julio Ramos
Relief Pitcher - Paul Smyth
Smyth was an easy choice here as the right hander didn’t allow a single run in 29.1 innings for Vancouver. The Athletics relief prospect had a 35.6% strikeout rate and a 3.8% walk rate to go with his 0.00 ERA and 0.54 WHIP.
Relief Pitcher - Charles Ruiz
The 20 year old reliever had a 1.14 ERA over 31.2 innings pitched with a 35.3% strikeout rate and a 9.2% walk rate to go along with a 1.07 WHIP.
